About Doc Hughes, Beachfront Restaurant in Torquay

Carrodoc ‘Doc’ Hughes ran a general store and a range of kiosks in Torquay from the late 1920s to the end of his life in 1972.

The shop was situated on the beautiful Torquay Esplanade and had been in the family for years, inherited by Doc from his aunt Louisa who was believed to have ownership in the early 1900’s.

The well-loved general store was not all that Doc ran in Torquay, as he also owned the building next door which is now the home of our restaurant & café named after the beloved owner himself.

Through the years, Doc developed a strong portfolio of properties and businesses in Torquay, and was known to be an enterprising pioneer in the history of the Surf Coast Shire.

Owners Tanya and Brendan Bennett opened Doc Hughes in November 2021, with the goal of introducing a new dining experience to Torquay, while paying homage to the rich history of the building.

Both Tanya and Brendan carry vast experience in the hospitality industry in Australia, and have a passion for people and food that can be seen in everything they do.
