About Doc Hughes, Beachfront Restaurant in Torquay

In the late 1920s, Carrodoc “Doc” Hughes became a familiar and much-loved figure in Torquay. From his general store and a collection of kiosks along the picturesque Torquay Esplanade, Doc served locals and visitors alike until his passing in 1972.

The original store had been in the Hughes family for decades, inherited by Doc from his aunt Louisa, who is believed to have owned the property in the early 1900s. Over time, Doc expanded his footprint, acquiring neighbouring buildings including the one that now houses our restaurant and café, proudly named in his honour.

An enterprising pioneer, Doc built a diverse portfolio of properties and businesses and remains an important part of Torquay’s rich coastal history.

In November 2021, the venue was reimagined as Doc Hughes a dining destination inspired by the character, warmth and entrepreneurial spirit of its namesake. Today, the business is proudly owned and operated by Tim and Jayne Kearney, who continues to honour the building’s heritage while delivering a welcoming, modern hospitality experience for locals and visitors alike.
